ChatGPT can help you turn a rough idea into a useful first draft, explain an unfamiliar term or organise a list. You write what you need in ordinary language, then ask follow-up questions until the answer is useful. You do not need to learn computer code.
This guide takes you through a first conversation in a web browser. Start with a small task that does not involve private information or an important decision.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI assistant from OpenAI. You give it a question or instruction, often called a prompt, and it generates a response. Useful starting points include drafting a message, explaining a confusing paragraph and suggesting ideas. OpenAI’s guide to using ChatGPT describes this back-and-forth approach.
Think of the response as something to review, rather than an answer that must be right. Clear, confident writing is not proof of accuracy. Your judgement still matters.
Do you need to pay?
Start with the free plan. OpenAI offers a Free plan and paid subscriptions, including Plus and Pro. You do not need to buy a subscription just to find out whether ChatGPT is useful to you. See the official plan information for the options currently offered.
Paid plans provide different levels of access and usage. Avoid paying for a feature you have not yet needed. First try a few ordinary tasks, then consider whether a limit is regularly getting in your way. Read the price, billing period, renewal terms and cancellation information shown before subscribing. Features and allowances can change, so this guide does not promise a fixed number of free messages.
Step 1: open the official website
- Open your usual web browser, such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
- Type chatgpt.com into the address bar at the top.
- Follow the account and sign-in instructions shown. If you already have a ChatGPT account, use that account rather than creating another unnecessarily.
- If offered subscription choices, start with the free option.
Using the website avoids installing an app for this first exercise. OpenAI’s web guide confirms the official address and the browser-based starting process.
Step 2: choose a simple chat
If you see a choice between Chat and Work, select Chat. That is the option for questions and conversation. Work is intended for larger tasks with a finished result, such as preparing a document. You can leave that for later.
Begin a new chat and find the box where you type your message. You do not need to choose an advanced model, connect another account or upload a file for this exercise. The layout may differ between devices and accounts; OpenAI notes that features depend on factors including your plan and platform.
Step 3: try your first useful prompt
Type or copy this example into the message box, then send it:
Help me write a short email to my local community centre asking about beginner photography classes. Ask when the next class starts, how much it costs and whether I need my own camera. Use friendly British English. Keep it under 120 words and use [my name] as a placeholder. Do not invent any details.
This gives ChatGPT a job, the details to include and a sensible length. It also avoids providing your real name or contact details. Replace photography with a subject that interests you.
Read the draft. Has it included all three questions? Has it added a date, promise or personal detail you did not supply? Correct anything unsuitable before copying it into your email app. For this exercise, copy the reviewed draft yourself; you do not need to connect your email account.
Step 4: improve the answer
You can continue in the same conversation. For example:
- “Make it shorter and a little less formal.”
- “Add a question about wheelchair access.”
- “Explain that last paragraph without technical words.”
You need not get everything right in the first message. OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends describing the result, adding relevant context and refining it with follow-up messages.
Protect your personal information
Before sharing real documents, review the privacy and data-control information offered in your account. Do not assume that paying for a personal subscription makes every conversation confidential, or that removing something from your screen proves it has disappeared everywhere.
For everyday use:
- Never paste passwords, bank-card details or security codes into a chat.
- Replace names, addresses and reference numbers with placeholders such as [customer number].
- Avoid uploading complete medical records, financial statements or identity documents for a casual experiment.
- Do not connect your email, files or other services unless you understand and need the access being requested.
Keep control of your accounts. Sign out when using a shared computer, and do not let someone asking for a “verification code” take over the sign-in process.
Check facts and avoid lookalikes
For information that changes, ask: “Search for current information and link to the official sources.” When ChatGPT uses web search on the website, results and citations appear in the conversation, although access can depend on workspace settings. See OpenAI’s web-search guidance.
Open the sources yourself. Check the organisation, date and whether the page actually supports the answer. If the answer concerns a train time, check the operator; if it concerns a community class, check the centre. Asking ChatGPT “Are you sure?” is not an independent check. For health, financial or legal decisions, use an appropriate qualified professional.
Return to the official address you typed or bookmarked. Be wary of adverts, unexpected support calls or messages demanding money to “activate” your account. Never give a stranger your password or sign-in code.
A good first session
One useful draft and one follow-up question are enough. Practise with low-risk tasks, keep private details out and check anything important before using it. Confidence comes from learning what helps you, not from trying every feature at once.
