A PDF gives you a document you can keep, rather than a web address you have to visit again. It can be useful for a recipe, a set of instructions or a page you want to read later.

This guide covers Chrome and Microsoft Edge on a Windows PC or Mac, plus Safari on a Mac. You can use the built-in printing controls to save a file instead of sending anything to a printer. You do not need to buy PDF software or install a browser extension.

Before you start: check for a download button

If the website offers its own Download PDF, Download receipt or Print-friendly version, try that first. For tickets, statements and official documents, use the file or delivery method the provider recommends. A browser-made copy may leave out details or change the layout.

Otherwise, open the exact page you want and wait for it to finish loading. Expand any sections you need to keep, then check whether they appear in the print preview. Saving one page does not save the rest of the website.

Save a web page as a PDF in Chrome

  1. With the page open in Chrome, hold Ctrl and press P on Windows. On a Mac, hold Command (⌘) and press P. Release both keys.
  2. In the print window, open the Destination list and choose Save as PDF.
  3. Look through the preview. Check the page count and make sure the part you need is included.
  4. Click Save. In the file window, choose a folder you will recognise and give the file a useful name, such as Garden planting instructions.pdf.
  5. Click Save again to finish.

Google documents the shortcuts in its Chrome printing guide and the PDF destination in its guide to saving Learning Centre pages.

Save a web page as a PDF in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the page, then select the three-dot menu → Print. Alternatively, press Ctrl + P on Windows or Command + P on a Mac.
  2. Open the Printer list and choose Save as PDF.
  3. Check the preview, then select Save.
  4. Choose the file name and folder, then save the file.

Use Edge’s Save as PDF option for these steps. Windows may also show a separate option called Microsoft Print to PDF, which uses a different printing route.

Microsoft explains the Edge print controls and distinguishes these two PDF options in its Edge printing notes.

Save a web page as a PDF in Safari on a Mac

  1. Open the page in Safari.
  2. At the top of the screen, choose File → Print, or press Command + P.
  3. In the print window, use the arrow beside PDF to open its menu, then choose Save as PDF.
  4. Choose a name and location, then click Save.

Depending on your Mac’s version, the PDF control may be a button with a small arrow beside it. Apple describes this in its guide to saving a PDF on Mac.

Open the saved file before you close the website

Go to the folder you chose and open the PDF. Check the beginning, middle and end, not just the first page. Are the instructions complete? Are important pictures and reference numbers visible? Is the writing large enough to read?

A PDF made this way is a printable copy, not a working version of the website. Videos will not play as they do on the page, and a changing timetable or price will not update in your saved copy. Keep the original web address as well if you will need current information.

If you only want a quick way back to the website, our guide to bookmarking a page in Chrome, Edge or Safari may be a better fit.

If the saved page looks wrong

  • Text is cut off: return to print preview and try landscape layout or a different scale. Check again before saving. Reducing the scale can make the writing smaller.
  • Too many pages: inspect the preview before choosing a page range. A useful paragraph can spill onto the next page.
  • Pictures or backgrounds are missing in Edge: look under More settings → Background graphics. This controls backgrounds, so it will not fix every missing image.
  • The website still will not save properly: use its own download or print-friendly option if available. Do not assume a blank or incomplete PDF is a usable copy.

Keep private documents in a suitable folder on your own device. A saved PDF can contain the same personal details as the original page. There is no need to upload it to an unfamiliar online converter just to follow this guide.

For a first attempt, practise with this article: save it, open the file and check that these final paragraphs are present.
